Roku TVs support a wide variety of external devices, from streaming players and gaming consoles to audio gear. However, changing inputs on these devices can be tricky.
Roku does not yet have a dedicated button for this feature, so you will have to rely on your television settings or third-party remotes until one is available.
Input Options
When purchasing a Roku TV, you may be uncertain of the input options available. You have plenty of choices from cable boxes to game consoles and even Blu-ray players. Furthermore, streaming devices like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or Android boxes can be connected for even wider selection of viewing possibilities.
Roku makes setting your TV’s input default easy: simply change it in a few easy steps and your desired input will be active automatically when turned on. It’s that easy!
To begin, press the Home button on your remote control – it appears as a small house and is situated in the upper-right corner, just below the Power button.
Next, select Settings on the left pane. This will bring up an option prompt – HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Live TV, etc.
Once you’ve selected your desired input, press OK. It will then display several option prompts so that you can choose which one to make the default input.
If you don’t have access to a remote, you can still set your input using the buttons on your television. Some models feature just one button while others have both power and directional buttons.
Additionally, you can switch inputs with the Roku app. Download it onto your phone or tablet from either Google Play Store or App Store and it’ll act as a remote for your Roku TV.
Once that is done, simply return to your Roku home screen and click Settings-TV Input-select Set Up Input for all inputs. Now you can quickly switch inputs on and off without having to leave your current location!
In addition to setting a default input, you can also adjust the resolution and refresh rate of your HDMI inputs. Doing so ensures you receive the highest quality image possible from your device. For instance, if it can output 4K 120Hz video signal, configure both HDMI inputs accordingly.
Setting a Default Input

Roku also makes setting a default input on your television easy, so that you don’t have to manually switch it every time the device turns on. The process is straightforward and doesn’t necessitate any special knowledge or tech support.
To set a default input, you’ll first need to plug in a device that supports HDMI-CEC. This enables your connected devices to control basic functions like volume and input switching.
Once connected, navigate to the Home screen on your Roku TV and select Settings > TV Inputs. Choose which option you would like as your default input and press OK.
Alternately, you can modify your default input using the buttons on your Roku TV remote. These typically reside on the back, bottom or side of the television and allow for power on/off, input selection, volume adjustment or mute functions.
However, this method can be inconvenient if you need to switch inputs on your TV frequently. To simplify things even further, 1-touch play allows for one-button switching with just the push of a button on the remote.
You can also set a default input using the Roku Mobile app on your smartphone or tablet. This app allows you to manage all of your roku TV and other devices connected to Wi-Fi even when without access to a remote control.
One of the simplest ways to set a default input on your Roku TV is by activating HDMI-CEC. This feature enables two devices connected together to control each other’s input switching and volume controls.
The best part of this feature is how fast and effortless it works. All you have to do is plug in your device, then the TV will instantly switch inputs when you press a button on your remote.
Altering from One Input to Another
If you have an external device connected to your Roku TV, such as a sound bar or cable box, you may need to change the input. There are several ways of doing this – using the control buttons on the remote, altering settings in the settings menu or speaking with Google Assistant.
First, locate the on-screen buttons that correspond with the inputs you wish to change. These can usually be found directly below or on the back of your Roku TV; some models have multiple buttons while others only offer one.
Pressing the asterisk button while watching an input allows you to access its options menu and adjust settings while watching its live picture and audio. This menu appears whenever a program requires changing the input’s settings, such as when switching channels or starting live broadcast.
Finally, you can rename an input by changing its preset name to something else. There are multiple pre-set names for each input but you have the option of selecting a custom one if none of the existing options accurately reflects what you would like your Roku TV to refer to that particular port.
Once you’re finished changing the input, press the home button on your remote to save the settings and make the new input the default.
This feature comes in handy if you’re having issues with a particular input on your Roku TV. For instance, if the Xbox One isn’t working properly, simply change the input to HDMI 2.
Roku TV makes connecting to other sources, like televisions that don’t have the Roku interface, much simpler; switching between these types of devices will be effortless.
If your television has an HDMI input, you can connect your Roku TV to it by plugging it into its compatible port. To do this, navigate to the appropriate input tile within Roku’s interface and select it.
Changing a Default Input

Once you’ve selected which input should be your default, press the Home button to save it. Alternatively, if you don’t have access to a remote or want to access the settings menu using another device, set it as your preferred input instead.
