Synchronizing a remote is an effortless process. All that needs to be done is press the pairing button on your remote, and it will automatically pair with your Roku device.
On occasion, however, you may wish to sync a Roku remote without using its pairing button. To do this, simply download an app on your smartphone or select “pair remote” from the options.
Method 1: Download the Roku App

This app is free to download and can be used to remotely control your Roku device with Wi-Fi or cellular data. It works with Roku players and streaming sticks alike, as well as Windows PCs.
Before using the mobile app to sync a Roku device, ensure your smartphone or tablet is connected to the same wireless network as its remote. The Roku app will automatically detect any Rokus on your network and allow you to tap them for easy control from within the app.
Some features of the mobile app are exclusive to certain Roku devices and require logging into your Roku account. On the other hand, all Roku users have access to voice search and premium channels.
For instance, the mobile app’s voice search feature is available in English and Spanish throughout the US, UK, and Mexico. Furthermore, it features a Roku Channel store where users can discover and subscribe to new channels.
When the app first launches, it will automatically scan your Wi-Fi network for available devices and present a discovery screen. Select which device you would like to sync with the Roku App.
Once installed, you may be asked to grant “Local Network” permissions on your iOS device in order for the mobile app to access your network. This may appear as a prompt upon launching the app or can be done from within Settings on your iPhone/iPad.
If the app is still not syncing with your Roku device, try unplugging the player or streaming stick for about 60 seconds and plugging it back in again. If that doesn’t solve the issue, you’ll have to restart your device.
Method 2: Use the Remote Pair option
If your Roku remote is having trouble pairing with your device, the Remote Pair option may work to fix the problem. Note that this method only works on certain TV models with physical buttons for navigating Settings menus; so be sure to test before trying this approach.
You may also try resetting your remote, which will delete all data from the device and restore it to factory settings. Resetting your remote may help address problems when pairing with other devices like Roku Stick or FireStick.
However, resetting your device can take some time and may not solve all issues you’re encountering. If you’re still having difficulties pairing your remote, this could be indicative of what’s causing the issue.
One of the most frequent reasons for a Roku remote not synching with your device is that it isn’t paired correctly. This can occur if it’s not connected to your Wi-Fi network, or if it is on a different network than all of your other devices.
If your smartphone is compatible, the Remote feature in the Roku app allows for seamless sync without using a pairing button. Just make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and there are no other applications running concurrently.

Alternatively, you can pair your remote using the on-screen Settings menu. Alternatively, power cycling a new remote will also work when pairing it with an existing Roku device.
You can program your remote’s programmable buttons to connect it to a device. This is an efficient way of getting the most out of your Roku remote and an alternative option to using its pairing button.
Method 3: Use the Roku Controller App
The Roku Controller App is an application that transforms your mobile device into a remote for your TV or streaming player. Available on both iOS and Android, it works with any Roku device connected to Wi-Fi and features a virtual remote for switching between different Wi-Fi networks.
Before using the Roku app, make sure both your device and smartphone are on the same Wi-Fi network. To check whether this is correct, go to Settings > Network and see if that fixes it.
If your device is connected to the wrong network, it won’t be able to sync with your smartphone and you’ll have to purchase a new remote in order to control your TV. You could also try connecting your smartphone to a Wi-Fi hotspot to see if that helps resolve the problem.
To pair your device with your smartphone, open the Roku app on your mobile and sign in. Afterwards, select which Roku device you wish to control from within it.
Roku App will display a list of available devices it can connect to, so be sure to select the correct one. It should then begin searching for that device you selected.
Once it detects your device, simply follow the on-screen instructions to pair your smartphone with it. This should take only a few seconds. If it doesn’t work, simply restart your device and attempt again with pairing.
Some Roku devices require you to press the pairing button on the remote in order for it to be detected by the TV. This is because the remote must be in a position that allows its infrared sensors (IRS) sensors to detect it.
Some of Roku’s more advanced devices offer a feature that makes pairing without a button unnecessary, such as TCL Roku TV and Roku Stick.
In some cases, you may need to re-pair your smartphone with your Roku device using the Remote Pair feature. This can be especially helpful if the app is having trouble connecting with your Roku device or if you have multiple remotes.
Method 4: Reset the Remote
If your Roku remote isn’t connecting with your device, there are a few things you can try. First, unplug the remote from its power source and TV, remove its batteries, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in again.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, replacing batteries may be necessary. If that’s not an option for you, try pressing and holding down on the remote’s pairing button for several seconds to try another approach.
The pairing button is located on the back of a remote, in its battery compartment, and can be used to quickly pair your device with another.
